The Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) at the University of Chile invites applications for two full-time academic positions (44 hours per week)- one of which is reserved exclusively for women- jointly appointed by the Institute for Data and Artificial Intelligence (IDIA). These positions are in the Theory and Applications of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Successful candidates are expected to engage in both individual and collaborative research, contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching (specially with the Master of Data Science), and participate in outreach activities. They will also have opportunities to develop industry connections through research and development projects, as well as involvement in postgraduate courses or diploma programs.

Salary will depend on the initial evaluation. For reference, the starting salary for an Assistant Professor ranges between CLP$3,400,000 (approximately USD 3,672) and CLP$4,000,000 (approximately USD 4,320) per month before taxes, with opportunities to supplement this salary through projects and other activities.

Research Areas: Applicants should have expertise in advancing both theoretical aspects and practical applications of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Machine Learning

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants must:

  • Hold a Ph.D. degree or be in the final stages of obtaining it before assuming the position. Proof of Ph.D. completion (certificate or letter from the Ph.D. program director) must be submitted before the application deadline.
  • Not be disqualified from holding public positions in Chile or have a record of disciplinary dismissal from public service within the last five years.
  • Foreign applicants must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish or commit to acquiring it within the first two years of employment. They must also comply with Chilean immigration regulations.

  • Citation report from Web of Science or NASA ADS
  • Must submit letters of recommendation, ideally three (3), which will be considered within the selection criteria.
  • Copies of academic degrees and diplomas (BSc. and Ph.D.)
  • Simple sworn statement confirming compliance with eligibility requirement.

The selection process will be conducted in two stages:

  1. Evaluation of academic and research background: Applications will be reviewed based on research area alignment, academic excellence, publications, letters of recommendation, and teaching experience.
  2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an oral presentation before the Academic Selection Committee.

  • Interview performance

The Initiative for Data and Artificial Intelligence (IDIA) brings together faculty members from multiple disciplines within FCFM to advance data science and artificial intelligence research from both theoretical and applied perspectives. IDIA plays a pivotal role in interdisciplinary collaboration, manages the Master’s in Data Science, and is leading the creation of a new Ph.D. program in Artificial Intelligence.
